Understanding the current opioid epidemic is critical to identifying how nurses might assist in efforts to reduce opioid overdose deaths. This presentation reviews the physiologic underpinnings of acute and chronic pain, before focusing on techniques to improve patients’ pain experiences with less reliance on opioids.
