Objectives:
1. Discuss the mechanism of action of Coumadin (warfarin) and appropriately determine the target goal of warfarin (Coumadin) for VTE (venothromboembolism) and its other uses, i.e. atrial fibrillation, apical clot, and mechanical valve .
2. Review the new medications in the market, the mechanism of action, side effects, and what to teach our patients.
3. Describe the advantages or disadvantages of the new emerging blood thinners.
4. Outline the guidelines for anticoagulation therapy, e.g. chest guidelines.
