It has been estimated that between 25% and 30% of the patients in an acute care facility are either dependent on alcohol or other substances or have a history of addiction. This session focuses on the care of patients with addiction from admission through discharge planning.

Recognize addiction as a disease.
Identify the nursing interventions to identify which patient is in withdrawal as well as the nursing care of a patient actively going through withdrawal.
Explain the unique care needs of patients who have a history of addiction but are currently not using.
