Nurses as Teachers: Academic and Service Partnerships in Clinical Education

This session describes the Dedicated Education Unit concept of partnership between academia and service and the process involved in preparing staff nurses to become clinical teachers of associate of science in nursing students in the medical-surgical setting.

Objectives:
• Describe the concept of a dedicated education unit (DEU) in providing transformative clinical nursing education to students in an ASN program. 
• Describe the many advantages to developing a consistent relationship between the clinical teacher and the staff development activities inherent in the program. 
• Discuss the process of educating staff nurses in components of the faculty role and the corresponding relationship with the clinical faculty on the unit. 
• Paraphrase an overview of the clinical teacher role as a source of evidence in meeting the Magnet standard showcasing nurses as teachers.
