The rise in suicide deaths and suicide attempts is a significant health concern that requires the medical-surgical nurse to understand the phenomenon of suicide, assess for precursors to suicidal behavior, and intervene appropriately to prevent suicide.

Psychosis is a condition involving disordered thinking, delusions, and hallucinations. It can be experienced by individuals with medical problems, or by patients with a psychiatric diagnosis (especially schizophrenia).

In this module, you will learn to recognize the components and manifestations of psychosis, signs and symptoms of bipolar disorders, common depressive disorders and dissociative disorders and identify the appropriate nursing interventions for each.

Of all psychiatric mental health diagnoses, personality disorders are the most complex and challenging to treat. All personality disorders are characterized by self-identity or self-direction challenges, and emotional dysregulation, which culminates in relationship problems. This module will review assessment implications and nursing interventions for patients with borderline, narcissistic, histrionic, paranoid and antisocial personality disorders.
