Designing Safer Care: How Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety and Medical-Surgical Nursing Align to Improve Patient Safety Recording
Presented By: Nelson Tuazon, DNP, DBA, RN, NEA-BC, CENP, CPPS, CPHFH, CNE, FNAP, FACHE, FAAN, FAMSN
This session explores human factors and ergonomics in healthcare and their impact on patient safety. It highlights how the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) model supports medical-surgical nursing practice, system design, and improved outcomes for patients, nurses, and organizations. Despite ongoing safety efforts, preventable harm continues to occur in healthcare settings. This presentation demonstrates how an interdisciplinary care team can apply SEIPS to redesign care processes, reduce risk, and enhance patient outcomes. Attendees will gain practical, team‑based strategies for leading sustainable system redesign through interdisciplinary collaboration and transformation using the Root Cause Analysis and Actions (RCA2) model.
