What Does Dementia Look Like?

Currently, in the US, there are over 7 million people living with Alzheimer’s type of dementia diagnosis, and it is projected that the number will rise to nearly 13 million by 2050 (Alzheimer’s Association, 2024). Hospitalization for people living with dementia can be difficult and is often associated with negative outcomes. Caring for people with dementia requires an empathetic nurse who has the attitude, knowledge, and self-confidence to be mindful of patients’ medical and personal history, values the significance of communication as an intervention, involves the family in care, and is creative in discovering this information to impact the care of people with dementia. This presentation will cover what dementia is, common types, importance of communication, BPSD’s, pain & delirium superimposed on dementia(DSD), and interventions.
