Medical-surgical nurses practicing in the hospital setting will sometimes care for patients withhyperglycemia. Some of these patients will be diagnosed with diabetes and yet some others will not, but all are at risk for other complications. Administering physiological insulin regimens is the most effective means to control blood glucose in patients with hyperglycemia. Nurses must be able to understand the importance of glycemic management and their role in the prevention of hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic events.
