Description

An epidural or nerve block center catheter is commonly used for postoperative pain relief. This presentation will help you learn the proper monitoring, patient education, management of adverse effects, treatment of local anesthetic systemic toxicity, and when to stop the infusion and obtain immediate assistance for patients with these catheters.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize various modalities of delivery of local anesthetic analgesia, (epidural, peripheral nerve block, and patient selection).
  • Describe the assessment of a patient receiving epidural analgesia.
  • Describe the appropriate nursing action related to caring for a patient with an epidural analgesia.
  • Identify the care of patient with peripheral nerve catheter analgesia.
