We know that a single malfunction of the gastrointestinal system can impact the course of an acute illness, but do we understand why? This session highlights the complicated relationships of the liver, the gut, and the pancreas and helps answer the “why” for what we do at the bedside. You will come away with a better understanding of WHY tests are ordered, WHEN to suspect gastrointestinal malfunction, WHO is at risk for intestinal failure, WHERE to look for complications associated with upper versus lower GI surgery, and WHAT to monitor during interventions and therapies.
