An important building block of clinical care is cultural competency. On its own, it’s not a remedy that will improve health outcomes and eliminate disparities; rather, it’s a necessary component if we’re to deliver optimized care to all patients. Research has shown that developing culturally competent strategies - combined with patient-centered interventions when possible - leads to enhanced health outcomes. At New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH), we support culturally congruent care, and have developed several strategies which all align to create a patientcentered and culturally sensitive approach to care. This promotes health outcomes by enhancing communication and provides education for staff and patients. In developing and implementing these strategies, we engaged members of our organization’s interprofessional teams as well as external agencies.
