The medical-surgical nurse can improve patient outcomes by recognizing typical physiologic changes for common problems among adult and geriatric trauma patients. Concepts involving analysis of care provided throughout the trauma cycle are reviewed. These include resuscitation, common injury patterns, assessment and recognition of complications, evidence-based interventions, and injury prevention.
