The current opioid epidemic has caused a public health crisis in the spread of blood-borne pathogens and infections in people who inject drugs (PWID) along with an increase in complications from overdose and overdose deaths. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the scope of the crisis and will be able to apply their expertise when caring for patients at the bedside.

The unfamiliarity of nurses with skills and equipment used in emergency situations has led to delays in initiation of compression and defibrillation. Actions taken during the first two minutes of a cardiac arrest are critical to patient outcomes. Nurse educators identified opportunities to improve response times in order to meet American Heart Association guidelines.
