I work on a medical surgical unit. I have been in nursing 41 years. I preach everyday get patients up for meals. There are so many reasons to get patients up for meals ;prevention of ileus, aspiration , pulmonary complications. I plan to have staff read this article. No more preaching to the choir.

Very surprising patient perspective that they can sit in a normal chair for meals instead of the hospital bed is their chair. Great observation of surgical versus medical unit practices.

This is such an important subject. From an aspiration risk to the comfort of the patient who isn't able to reposition themselves
